Cartilage Defect Management – No single treatment

In our center cartilage defects are managed in unique way. Each defect is managed based on geometry, size and location. The options are

MICROFRACTURE:

If the defect is small, this simple technique can be employed to give predictable results. Here tiny holes are made in the exposed bone. This releases stem cells which differentiate into cartilage in 6-8 weeks

Microfracture ? Blood from holes bring stem cells to regenerate new cartilage

OATS (Osteochondral Autograft Plug Transfer):

If the defect happens in younger individuals and if it involves underlying bone as well, this procedure is considered. This technique gives early and robust healing

BMAC (Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate):

If the defect is large this technique is carried out. Here stem cell are harvested from hip with the help of a special needle. The cells are concentrated and applied to the defect like a paste.

Advantages of this technique when compared to other related procedures like ACI are, one surgery, less expensive, can be done arthroscopically.
