The meniscus is a rubbery cartilage that cushions the Knee joint, thus stabilizing it. It is shaped like a crescent. Each knee has two menisci, one at the outer edge of the knee and the other at the inner edge. Acting as a strong stabilizing tissue, the menisci helps in keeping you knee steady and balances your weight across the knee. It helps the knee joint glide and turn in many directions.
The meniscus cushion plays a crucial role in preventing premature arthritis.
It prevents the thighbone and shinbone from grinding against each other. This is the most common injured part of the knee and sport personalities are more prone to meniscus cushion injury. It generally happens in combination with other injuries like ACL.
Treatment method depends on the extent of damage to the meniscus cushion.
