Hip Arthritis

Surgery of the hip for arthritis is generally performed only if other forms of treatment are not effective. Since this is a complicated surgery, patients are advised to seek medical assistance from experienced doctors from hospitals equipped with necessary facilities. Generally an epidural anesthetic with a general anesthetic is given for the surgery. The whole surgical process may take 2 hours. Pain killers may have to be used for two to four weeks. Stay at the hospital may be required for 4 or 5 days and surgical wound dressings may be changed every day. Rehabilitation starts on the first day after operation. It begins with sitting, standing and progresses to stair climbing. After 6 weeks, ordinary daily activities may be resumed.
