HOW KINEMATIC KNEE REPLACEMENT OUTSCORES CONVENTIONAL TECHNIQUE:
The conventional technique of knee replacement has been yielding positive clinical outcomes since 1968. But still, significant percentage of patients are not satisfied and do have persistent problems.
To overcome this, the kinematic alignment technique was introduced in knee replacement surgery in North America in 2006, In India, Kinematic alignment in knee replacement in Chennai is first introduced by Rathimed
Speciality Hospital, Chennai in 2016 and been performed by renowned
Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. N. Ragunanthan.
He is a pioneering surgeon in introducing new techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery.
He explains how this technique outscores conventional knee replacement techniques.
The natural alignment of the knee in each replacement alignment is uniformly shifted to a single alignment. In India, many of us have more inclined knees (constitutional varus) compared to people of other countries hence this shift is large insignificant number of patients. If the shift is large then patients are unsatisfied and may have persistent problems like pain with stiffness or instability. The percentage of such patients is roughly 10 percent.
RESTORES NATURAL ALIGNMENT OF KNEE:
In kinematic knee replacement the implants are positioned in such a way the natural alignment of the knee is restored in each and every individual. This is more like customization of the knee replacement. Because the anatomical alignment is restored, patients who underwent conventional technique is one knee and kinematic technique in another knee.
MORE ACCURATE THAN COMPUTER ASSISTED NAVIGATION KNEE REPLACEMENT:
In kinematic knee replacement each and every cut is measured. To be precise, accuracy of 6 cuts are measured and the accuracy is within 0.5mm to 1mm. These cuts can be more fine tuned if needed.
In conventional technique two ligaments are released to accommodate the implants. In kinematic knee replacement patients are made to walk as early as 12 hours and few immediately after the recover from spinal anaesthesia. Almost all of them walk independently in 48 to 72 hours period(in conventional technique 2 to 4 weeks). This gives confidence to our patients that they can start their routine day to day work when they go home. Many of our patients go for regular walking as early as 2 weeks.
NO ANTI INFLAMMATORY OR OPIOD PAINKILLERS
Post surgery the recovery process is sail through. Only safer paracetemol is used for post operative pain management Since stronger pain killers are not needed, their harmful side effects are completely prevented.
NO BLOOD TRANSFUSION
Since the ligaments are not released and knee replacement is done by MINIMALLY INVASIVE MUSCLE PRESERVING TECHNIQUE. Very minimal blood loss happens. So far no blood has been transfused to any of our patients. This includes Replacement of both the knee replacements in the same admission.
Where as the conventional transfusion technique requirement for transfusion is between 2 to 10 percent.
Detail of every patient who undergoes Kinematic knee replacement in Chennai at Rathi Med Speciality Hospital is documented, The documentation includes their ore surgery functional & pain score, Haemoglobin and post operative functional & pain score and haemoglobin. This gives us a robust idea how well each patient is satisfied after kinematic knee replacement surgery.
